SCI Youth Councils show their commitment, even when times are tough!
Pictured to the left SCI AmeriCorps Youth Leadership Coordinator,
Jennifer Ward from the SCI Milford Youth Council and Jim Sanchioni,
Director of Milford Youth Center, delivered nearly 300 pairs of
children's pajamas to BJ's Wholesale Club, General Manager, Joe
Reardon. BJ's, in collaboration with the Boston Bruins, has been
collecting children's new and unused pajamas to give to nonprofit
organization, Cradles to Crayons. SCI Youth Council collections have been extremely
successful in helping meet the basic needs of struggling community members; such as SCI Woburn Youth Council’s Jeans for Teens initiative, SCI Lynn’s canned food collection in conjunction with Compare Supermarket, and the Winter Coat Drive in Dorchester.

Youth Council Members Report College Success
Submitted by David on Sat, 07/11/2009 - 6:22am.One of our AmeriCorps members, Kevin McGravey, was mentioned he'd been hearing several reports of former SCI Youth Council members who have attributed their success in college in part to the leadership experience they gained on the Youth Council. Sounds like this is an avenue we should think about for future impact evaluation. Meanwhile, this anecdote he relayed from a parent is compelling:
"My child was one of the first group of youth council members and just finished her second year of college. Her youth council experience gave her the skills she needed to succeed. When she was part of youth council I always thought it was a nice way for her to give back to the community but after a few years of youth council I noticed she was more independent, able to speak her mind and lead her peers. Those qualities have so helpful for her inside and outside of the classroom."

Local kids have the chance to boost their leadership skills, participate in civic life and make a direct positive impact on their community, thanks to $25,000 grant from the Comcast Foundation.
Comcast, the nation’s leading provider of entertainment, information and communications, awarded the grant to SCI Social Capital Inc. to bring their youth council program to Milford and create a new opportunity for children between the ages of 12 and 18.
Kids selected as members of the council will administer an annual mini-grant program that will fund community projects proposed by other Milford youth through the Juvenile Advocacy Group (JAG).

It's Better to Give and Receive
"One of the most satisfying experiences of this year was having the opportunity to connect Carol, a community member, with resources that enrich her life. Carol is a vivacious woman who is active with her local neighborhood association, Greater Four Corners, and she also volunteers her time to give free piano lessons to community members in the building where I serve. read more »
